What’s On in Athens: Late August & September 2026
Table of Contents
Late summer is one of the best times to experience Athens. The city gradually returns from its August pause, while open-air cinemas, rooftop screenings, concerts and exhibitions continue well into September.
Whether you live in Athens, are visiting the city or are considering making it your future home, here are some of the cultural events worth adding to your calendar.
Late-August Highlights
Athens Open Air Film Festival

Until 26 August
The Athens Open Air Film Festival transforms some of the city’s most atmospheric locations into outdoor cinemas. Screenings take place in courtyards, archaeological sites, parks and other unexpected urban spaces.
It is a wonderful way to experience both cinema and the city after sunset. Some screenings are free, but availability and admission arrangements vary by event.
CineFIX: Rooftop Cinema at EMST
27 August–3 September
CineFIX brings open-air cinema to the rooftop terrace of the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens.
The combination of contemporary film, architecture and evening views over Athens makes this more than an ordinary cinema visit. The museum is located in Koukaki, within easy reach of the historic centre and the Acropolis.
August Full Moon at the Acropolis Museum

28 August
The August full moon is traditionally a special cultural evening in Greece, with museums and archaeological sites extending their opening hours or organising dedicated events.
The Acropolis Museum will mark the occasion on 28 August. Visitors should check the official museum programme for opening hours, admission information and the final schedule.
Athens Photo World 2026
Until 31 August
Athens Photo World brings photojournalism and documentary photography into the city through exhibitions and public activities.
Its displays often extend beyond conventional galleries, giving visitors another reason to explore central Athens while discovering contemporary visual stories from Greece and abroad.
Music and Performances in September
Music Technopolis

2–20 September
Technopolis in Gazi begins September with a full programme of concerts, anniversary performances and festivals.
The former gasworks is now one of Athens’ best-known cultural venues. Its industrial architecture, large outdoor spaces and location close to Kerameikos metro station make it a popular destination for summer and early-autumn evenings.
The programme runs from 2 to 20 September. Individual performances and times can be checked through the Technopolis City of Athens programme.
Beatles Symphonic
6 September
The music of the Beatles receives a symphonic interpretation at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
Set within the SNFCC’s open park environment in Palaio Faliro, the concert offers an opportunity to combine live music with an evening walk beside the canal and Mediterranean garden.
Sunset Frequencies at SNFCC

Until 9 September
Sunset Frequencies is designed around summer evenings at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
The setting is an important part of the experience: visitors can arrive early, explore the park and watch the light change over the city before the music begins.
Leonard Cohen Tribute
12 September
A tribute to Leonard Cohen will take place as part of the Parklife programme at the SNFCC.
Cohen had a long and meaningful connection with Greece, making this an especially fitting event for an Athenian late-summer evening.
Sivert Høyem at Lycabettus Theatre

19 September
Norwegian singer and songwriter Sivert Høyem performs at the open-air Lycabettus Theatre.
Located high above the centre, Lycabettus is one of the city’s most memorable concert settings. The journey up the hill and the view across Athens are part of the evening, so allow time to arrive before the performance.
Jeff Mills: Tomorrow Comes the Harvest
20 September
Electronic music pioneer Jeff Mills brings Tomorrow Comes the Harvest to Athens on 20 September.
The project explores the meeting point between electronic music, improvisation and live performance, making it one of the more distinctive musical events in the September programme.
Jack Savoretti
25 September
British-Italian singer and songwriter Jack Savoretti returns to Athens for a September performance.
His Mediterranean influences and melodic acoustic sound are particularly suited to an outdoor concert at the end of the Athenian summer.
Exhibitions Closing in September
Several exhibitions remain open during the first part of September, including programmes at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens.
Among those scheduled to close on 20 September are:
- Niki Kanagini: An Ode to Things – A Retrospective;
- Stathis Logothetis: Earth to Earth;
- Jani Christou: Enantiodromia.
Another exhibition, Here Comes the Sun, continues until 12 September, while The Avant-Garde World: City, Nature, Universe, Human is scheduled through the end of the month.
These exhibitions are useful options for warm afternoons, as well as for visitors looking beyond the city’s archaeological landmarks.
Athens Between Summer and Autumn
Late August and September reveal a different side of Athens. The city is still warm and outdoor life continues, but the cultural calendar becomes fuller as residents return from their holidays.
Concerts on Lycabettus Hill, rooftop cinema in Koukaki, evenings at the SNFCC and exhibitions in the historic centre show why Athens is more than a seasonal destination. It is a city with an active cultural life and neighbourhoods that each offer a different way of experiencing it.
Event dates and programmes may change. Check the organiser’s official website before visiting. The Official Athens Guide also maintains an updated city events calendar.
